Caregiver pay

What could you earn caring for someone you love?

Through Missouri's CDS program you can be paid to care for a parent, grandparent, adult child, friend or neighbor. The rate is $15.00 an hour, paid weekly every Thursday. Move the slider to however many hours you already spend.

Not sure? Most of our caregivers are authorized somewhere between 15 and 40 hours a week.

An honest caveat. Your hours are not something you or we choose. The state assesses the person needing care and authorizes a number of hours based on what they actually need. This calculator shows what those hours are worth at $15.00 an hour, before tax. We will tell you the real number as soon as the assessment is done.

Questions

Before you ask

Who can I be paid to care for?
A parent, grandparent, adult child, other relative, friend or neighbor, as long as they have active Missouri Medicaid and live in their own home. You cannot be paid to care for your spouse, or for someone whose legal guardian you are. That is a state rule, not ours.
Do I need experience or a certificate?
No. Many of our caregivers had never been paid for care before, and started by looking after their own family. We train you on what you need.
Is this taxed?
Yes, it is regular employment income and tax is withheld from your pay like any other job. The figures above are before tax. You get a W-2.
Can I do this alongside another job or studying?
Yes, and plenty of people do. One of our caregivers is a full-time student caring for her grandmother. You cannot record CDS hours for time you were working somewhere else.
Who is my employer?
The person you care for. In the CDS program the consumer is the employer and chooses who works for them. We handle payroll, taxes and paperwork, and help make the introduction.
